Everyone knows what a battery is.
Almost nobody watches it work.

A battery is just chemistry that pushes electrons. That's it. But the pack in your vehicle lives inside a world of conversions, heat, and habits it cannot see — and chemistry has no self-awareness. Here is the whole story, in plain language.

The cell never sees the grid or the motor. It only feels current, voltage, and temperature — the three things CellIQ measures per cell, every moment.
01 · HEAT

Running hot

Every 10°C above the safe band roughly doubles the speed of aging. The chemistry races — including the side-reactions that eat capacity.

What you see: nothing. Until the range is gone.
02 · COLD CHARGE

Charging cold

Below ~5°C, incoming lithium can't slot into the anode — it plates as metal instead. That capacity never comes back.

What you see: nothing. It's permanent on day one.
03 · DEEP CYCLES

Draining to empty

100% → 0% every day mechanically strains the electrodes. Shallow cycles can multiply life several times over.

What you see: nothing. The pack just quietly ages 3× faster.
04 · CELL DRIFT

One weak cell

Cells age at different speeds. In a series string, the weakest cell caps the entire pack — the other cells carry capacity you can no longer touch.

What you see: nothing. Until one cell decides for all of them.
05 · SITTING FULL

Parked at 100%

High voltage plus warmth ages a cell even when nothing is happening. Calendar aging never sleeps — it just works slower than abuse.

What you see: nothing. The clock runs while it's parked.

The BMS can't use capacity it can't trust. Every millivolt of measurement uncertainty becomes a guard band — margin the pack keeps in reserve to stay safe. Tighten the accuracy and watch usable capacity come back. Nothing else about the pack changes.

Reference voltage

Every ADC reading is measured against the reference. If the reference drifts with temperature or age, every "measurement" drifts with it — silently. We spec references for drift over 10 years, not day one.

Temperature-aware sensing

Component values shift with temperature; so does the reading. Knowledge means measuring the measurement chain — compensating drift instead of pretending it isn't there.

Data integrity

A corrupted reading is worse than no reading — decisions get made on it. Checksums, plausibility windows, and sensor cross-checks keep the truth chain unbroken from cell tap to cloud.

Where measurements
become strategy.

The decision layer holds the pack inside its protective operating area, estimates what the cells can actually give, and chooses how to spend balancing energy. Every decision is a rule you can read — deterministic where safety demands it.

The live operating point wanders with duty and weather — the decision layer's job is to keep it inside the green fence. Blue: cold-charge lockout (plating). Amber: current derate. Red: hard cutoff. The fence is chemistry-specific and temperature-gated — never a single fixed number.

Execution is where architecture is chosen, currents are switched, and the pack talks to the vehicle, the charger, and the cloud — with hardware isolation between high voltage and logic, and cryptographic identity on every conversation.

      The pack announces its model and serial. Nothing is trusted yet — a name is just a claim.

      Challenge · random nonce

      The charger sends a one-time random number. A recording of yesterday's handshake is useless — replay attacks die here.

      Signed response + certificate

      The pack signs the nonce with a private key sealed in hardware at manufacture, and attaches its certificate — proof of identity without ever revealing the key.

      Chain verification

      The certificate is checked against the issuing authority: genuine, unexpired, unrevoked. Counterfeit and cloned packs are refused here.

      Approval + certified limits

      The approval comes back signed — carrying the pack's certified charge window (V · I · T). The charger cannot exceed what the pack is rated for.

      Contactor closes · session key

      Only now does current flow. Both sides derive a session key — every telemetry frame after this is encrypted and authenticated.

      The private key never leaves the pack's secure element — not to the charger, not to the cloud, not to us. Identity is proven, never shared.
